The new identity for more than two miles of shoreline along the Firth of Forth was offically launched on 5th March. Edinburgh Forthside, owned by Forth Ports PLC, comprises three major areas of development: Granton Harbour, Western Harbour and the Port of Leith. Both Granton and Western Harbours have been masterplanned by Robert Adam Architects and will collectively form one of the most significant urban regeneration projects in Europe.
Each masterplan has been designed according to the principles of Traditional Urbanism, creating dense streetscapes of a human scale. Each area also has its own design ‘codes’, providing guidelines on size, proportions, and materials to which each developer must adhere. This framework protects the character of each site, ensuring that spaces and places are built on a human scale with reference to the local building character. They also whilst allowing for variety in building style and enabling modern and traditional buildings to sit happily side by side. The new developments will be integrated into the existing communities at Leith, Newhaven and Granton and will reconnect Edinburgh with its historic waterfront. The developments were also featured in the Sunday Times on 6th March in an article by Hugh Pearman.
