Planning Permission Granted at 45 The Park, Cheltenham |
|||
| Robert Adam Architects were recently granted planning permission for a new, three-storey classical villa within a particularly sensitive part of the Central Cheltenham Conservation Area. The plot of No. 45 is one of the largest within a predominantly Regency environment of classical villas and mature landscaping. However, the existing modern property at this site dates from the 1960’s and in its form, proportions, and materials fails to harmonise with the surrounding local context. The new villa is in contrast, sensitive to the character of the area and its classical tradition. Appropriately sized, the design respects the established scale of the other historic villas on the park and carefully designed elements such as a deep Doric porch and full-length tripartite windows refer to local building features. A carefully considered landscape strategy further ensures that the design relates to its surroundings. However, the design simultaneously retains a distinctive character of its own and is fully adapted to contemporary living. As recognised by the Architects panel, the villa is “an excellent progressive classical design that suits its context.” This new house provides a rare opportunity to enhance the special character of The Park and the wider conservation area. The design was praised by Cheltenham Borough Council, as an “excellent, contextual, classically inspired villa” of “exceptional quality.” Furthermore, it was importantly acknowledged that the design was not a “dull copy” of existing buildings but “a bespoke house fitted to its purpose and setting,” reinforcing the fact that classical design is highly relevant and appropriate to modern life. |
