New Staff Appointments - October 2004

The Directors of Robert Adam Architects are pleased to announce significant changes in the management of the company. George Saumarez Smith has been appointed a Director of Robert Adam Architects alongside Paul Hanvey, Nigel Anderson, Hugh Petter and Robert Adam.

George Saumarez Smith graduated from Edinburgh University with a first class honours degree since entering practice in 1995, he has developed a particular expertise in Palladian architecture, country house design and urban master planning. His accomplished drawings have been widely published and exhibited and most recently, his essay 'In Erith’s Footsteps' has been featured in the exhibition catalogue of Raymond Erith: Progressive Classicist, a major retrospective reviewing the work of his grandfather, Raymond Erith, at Sir John Soane's Museum.

Speaking of Saumarez Smith's promotion Robert Adam said, "We are delighted that one of the most talented young classical architects in Britain is joining us. At only 31, George brings us firmly into the next generation. He will have maximum opportunity to progress the firm, and develop personally.” Robert Adam Architects has no formal seniority between directors, each with his own client base and variation of interest while being unified in design philosophy. This enables the firm to constantly develop and provides exceptional opportunities for energetic and talented young architects.

Derek Brentnall, Gareth Bristow and Shaun Knight have also been appointed as Associate Directors within the firm, and Christopher Liberatos and Andrew Pragnell will become Associates. These new appointments will no doubt strengthen and enhance the firm's established reputation in classical design.
