The
next phase of the Poundbury development is now underway
Construction
work has now started on the second residential phase of
the Duchy of Cornwall's new town of Poundbury, near Dorchester.
Robert Adam Architects Limited has designed thirty five
of the new dwellings, ranging from two bedroom flats to
five bedroom detached houses.
Our
clients, the locally based developer and builder C G Fry
and Son, were responsible for significant sections of the
highly acclaimed and successful first phase of the settlement.
Our involvement in the development began with an invitation
from The Duchy of Cornwall to participate in a limited entry
competition to produce proposals for the second phase of
Poundbury.
Our
initial designs won this competition and we were subsequently
commissioned by C G Fry and Son to progress the original
concepts for four sections of Phase 2 through to drawings
for construction purposes. The new buildings continue the
Prince of Wales's now proven original vision of Poundbury.
The development suggests a gradual and natural growth of
townscape and built form that has organically evolved over
the years within the framework of traditional building techniques.
Dwellings are considered as part of a group of buildings
and not just as individual structures. They range in style
from provincial eighteenth century Georgian and local vernacular
to the Arts and Crafts movement of the late nineteenth century.
