The Robert Adam Architects designed development, ‘Northcourt’ in Finchampstead, has recently been completed. This project for Millgate Homes involved the creation of 12 new 2 and 3 bedroom apartments in a high quality parkland setting.
The site was previously occupied by a property built in 1857 by Decimus Burton and substantially altered in 1873. However, this typically Victorian gothic style house was virtually destroyed by fire and was later demolished. The new building is located upon the approximate footprint of the original house and is a sympathetic addition to what was an empty, prime site.
Northcourt was designed as a house with three distinct parts, in a manner consistent with the original building and which creates the illusion that the structure that has evolved over time. The main house has the highest roofline with gables, decorative chimneys and a large stairwell window extending over two storeys. The secondary wing was designed with a lower roofline and pared down detailing to suggest a later extension and the service wing is simpler again, giving the appearance of a traditional servants’ quarters. Many details throughout are drawn from the original house with other references such as castellation, diapered brickwork and gothic arches inspired by properties of the same type and period.
The finished building is of a volume and character that is entirely reflective of the former Victorian house and which enhances the original landscape.
