Pembroke House, designed by Hugh Petter on Paradise Island has just been featured in a Country Life Magazine article by the well-known scholar, Professor Richard John. The article, solely dedicated to the design of the new house, reveals the tale of redevelopment on this small tropical island, which has become the full time home of the client, John Barroll Brown. Richard John conducts a detailed tour of the property, which combines Colonial architectural influences with traditional Caribbean details and the latest technology, to create a comfortable, modern family home. The main accommodation is housed in the central block of the house, at the heart of which is a double height stair hall. A wide portico on the entrance front terminates a vista from the approach road and, on the seaward side a full-length two-storey porch offers stunning views over the swimming pool to the ocean beyond. The piece pays particular attention to the way in which British classical architecture is enjoying a successful revival in the USA and Caribbean. Hugh Petter is praised for his expert handling of the classical idiom, and ability to create a sophisticated pared down design that thanks to its sold construction and use of local craftsmen and materials, feels rooted in the site and its local building traditions. Hugh Petter worked closely alongside Shaun Knight and Ben Bolgar of Robert Adam Architects, with Kim Wilkie providing the landscape design.
