Robert Adam Architects won the competition to design and develop this town centre site which contained five unattractive blocks of post-war maisonettes and flats. The new development will include 47 houses and 4 shops and will create a high quality environment in the heart of the town while maintaining and accentuating the existing character of Rocester and the surrounding area.
Robert Adam’s proposals recognise the significance of the centre and the spaces around the crossroads and develop them, using an informal widening to create a natural town square. The surrounding buildings have minor variations in detail and size to give additional character. Changes in road direction create a focal point in the square, which is visible from all points of entry, and a small market cross will provide shelter and a meeting place.
The new dwellings have been designed to reflect the local vernacular and use simple brick details such as arches, corbels and eaves dentils, together with timber windows and porches. The roofs are finished with traditional clay tiles. The shops form a group in the centre and are detailed in the same manner as the houses.
