POUNDBURY PHASE 2
Near Dorchester, Dorset

This competition winning design for 30 new units is a development of the established infrastructure and Masterplan, The density of 15 units per acre enabled the creation of a traditional urban character and streetscape, each building designed to be part of a group. A variety of building scales is achieved by mixing the dwelling sizes and types, with small flats in one block in close proximity to individual houses or terrace groups. Vistas are terminated with larger and higher structures or unusual one off designs.

The proposals draw upon the local example of nearby settlements such as Bridport. Here traditional buildings of various ages exist side by side. The designs for Poundbury deliberately reflect the variety of styles that give these settlements their character and do not pursue a purely classically inspired design solution. The success of the development demonstrates that a respect for the traditions of the past can be fused with a living environment that is built for now and the future.

Within this context some individual groups will be more prominent than others and the choice of materials reflects the building hierarchy. All materials selected are from the Poundbury Building Code.
