This project for Millgate Homes involved the creation of 12 new 2 and 3 bedroom apartments in a high quality parkland setting. The site was previously occupied by a Victorian property built in 1857 by Decimus Burton and substantially altered in 1873. However, this typically Victorian gothic style property was later demolished after being virtually destroyed by fire. The proposed new building is located upon the approximate footprint of the original house and is a sympathetic addition to a now empty site.

The new building is designed as a house with three distinct parts, in a manner consistent with the original building creating the illusion that the structure has evolved over time. The main house has the highest roofline with dominant gables, decorative chimneys and a large stairwell window dramatically extending over two storeys. In contrast, the secondary wing has been designed to suggest a later extension with a slightly lower roofline and pared down detailing. The service wing is simpler again, giving the appearance of a traditional servants’ quarters and kitchens.

Details throughout are drawn from the original house, such as castellation, diapered brickwork and gothic headed arches. The result is a building of a volume and character that is entirely reflective of the former Victorian house and which maintains and enhances the original landscape.

Construction work was completed in the summer of 2004.
