Proposals for the remodelling of the Lincoln Centre in New York, located on an important site between Broadway and Lincoln Square. Although identified as a ‘square’ on maps, Lincoln Square does not have the same presence as other major urban spaces such as Union, Madison or Times Square, due to the current configuration and design of surrounding buildings and spaces. The existing structures on the site turn their back onto Lincoln Square and there is no visual connection between the existing open space on the site and the square beyond.
The proposals combine the redevelopment of the site with the enhancement of the identity of Lincoln Square. The designs form a new urban cluster focused upon a central fountain court and would create a direct diagonal link to a new entrance plaza the northeast corner of Lincoln Square.
A range of classical buildings around the enclosed square create a new urban quarter. In particular, the proposed Opera House tower has a strong visual connection with Lincoln Square and comprises valuable apartment and penthouse space and a restaurant within its rooftop temples. The adjoining Metropolitan opera house has a rooftop terrace restaurant and bay, linked to Damrisch Park. Collectively, these proposals have the potential to reinforce the unity of Lincoln Square, enhance its presence from Broadway and Columbus and emphasize its status on Manhattan Island as a whole.
