Development will take place in several phases, each constructed by private housing developers or housing associations, in accordance with the masterplan and comprehensive design requirements and guidelines.
The small country town of Shepton Mallet lies in the foothills of the eastern Mendip Hills in south west England. Field Farm is a 42 acre site to the south east of the town centre which is owned, along with much of the adjoining land, by the Vagg family and the Prince of Wales's Estate, the Duchy of Cornwall. It was chosen for the creation of a new residential district for its convenient location and its relationship with the existing the town centre.
The new development will respect both the existing features and the surrounding landscape. Robert Adam was selected to prepare a masterplan from his work on traditional design and experience of housing developments. The new district will have the character of a self contained community within the larger community of Shepton Mallet. There will be 360 dwellings and a housing mix has been selected to cater for local needs. In addition, the scheme includes an old chapel, (which will be relocated to the site to act as a community building), an open green, a village square, the original farmhouse and associated park land, a new school and a local shop.
