Whiteley Village was established in 1911 by William Whiteley for retired members of the commercial and agricultural trades. It still functions as a self-contained centre for the elderly. Robert Adam Architects developed a 25-year Masterplan for the Edwardian village, creating a logical and sustainable solution to its long-term needs. The work included the creation of a new 50 unit, sheltered housing building, known as ‘Huntley House’, containing self-contained single and double flats, restaurant, hairdressing and laundry facilities, alongside social rooms, offices and storage.
The design respects and maintains the important historical character of the Village whilst providing high standards of accommodation for its residents. The main elevation was divided into three pavilions and linked by cross wings, a configuration specifically designed to reflect the massing of the existing buildings. The use of different colours of brick accentuates this configuration, further breaking down the mass of the building and avoiding any impression of bulk.
The strength and quality of the architectural vocabulary of the village is recognized in the choice of materials and detailing. The building is constructed of a brick blend specially selected to match the smaller size and type of brick used in the village. The building was the winner of Best Private Housing Development in the 2004 Brick Awards.
