NEW ENGLISH BAROQUE COUNTRY HOUSE

HUGH PETTER
BA (HONS) DIPL ARCH RIBA FRSA

This project is located on a dense 45-acre woodland estate, the former site of an undistinguished residential building. The design by Hugh Petter involves the replacement of the existing dwelling with a significant new country house of a design, scale and quality to compliment its unique location and develop the English Baroque tradition in the 21st century.

The plan of the new building is informed by and designed in direct response to the landscape. The site will be approached through formal entrance gates towards a contained entrance court and the western elevation of the house with pavilion wings that step out into the landscape. The eastern elevation looks down over sloping land towards the parkland, existing lake and woodland beyond, establishing a strong relationship between the built form and the landscape.

Both main elevations are articulated by a giant Corinthian order and pedimented portico, surmounted by rooftop balustrade and decorative classical urns. The architectural climax of the design is an Ionic cupola, a strong characteristic of English Baroque architecture that punctuates the skyline and acts as a dramatic vertical landmark. The enveloping side pavilions house a swimming pool and garaging, and in contrast are one-storey wings, utilising the Ionic order in keeping with their subsidiary relationship to the main block of the house. The house as a whole features high quality, architectural decorations of wreaths and festoons, with a decorative bas-relief in the tympanum of the pediment.

A domed Dower House on a symmetrical butterfly plan is a key feature of the landscape, and a series of woodland buildings including a Lake Lodge, Meditation Temple and Workshop, are to be located throughout the grounds. These structures follow a long tradition of English estate buildings that echo the architectural vocabulary of the main house. Internally, the design features an elegant entrance hall, which creates a dramatic focus to the composition. The house is a literate classical design that will fuse with the established character of the site and function as a dramatic yet comfortable family home.
