MASTERPLAN AT COED DARCY
South Wales

ROBERT ADAM
DIPL ARCH(PCL) RIBA FRSA

This masterplan comprises some 538 hectares of a decommissioned and cleared BP crude oil refinery at Neath in South Wales. The conversion of the area into a new sustainable community is the largest of its type in Britain today and will help to raise aspirations for the regeneration across Wales and beyond.

The project is lead by a partnership including the Welsh Development Agency, BP, Neath Port Talbot Council and the Prince’s Foundation. Robert Adam Architects have prepared the scheme for Phase 1 and 2 of the Coed Darcy Urban Village in accordance with the approved Masterplan and Towncode produced by Alan Baxter & Associates and based on the principles of New Urbanism.

The project is a mixed use development of almost 4000 homes, schools, shopping and work places, all within the context of a walkable neighbourhood. At its heart will be a new village centre served by an integrated public transport network connecting with the adjacent districts of Swansea and Neath.

The design approach of the Residential District emphasises a combination of Welsh rural vernacular and the Arts and Crafts style of Llandarcy Village as recommended in the Masterplan. The buildings will be of high quality with a strong emphasis on sustainability.
