The British School at Rome is a centre for advanced British and Commonwealth archaeological, historical and artistic study in Italy. The original building was designed by Sir Edwin Lutyens in 1911 as part of the British Pavilion at the Rome Exhibition of that year. It now houses up to 40 scholars and visitors and an important library. Hugh Petter of Robert Adam Architects prepared a masterplan document for the phased renovation of the original building.

The total contract value of this work was £1.05 million and it was completed in 1998.  Concept designs were also prepared by Hugh Petter for a new multipurpose lecture theatre and gallery and a new reading room for the library.  The £2.15 million was raised for these projects with generous contributions from the Sainsbury’s Linbury Trust and from the Packard Humanities Institute.  Robert Adam Architects were subsequently retained as design consultants; the project architects were the local firm of Garofalo Miura.

The work was completed in 2002.
